Geography
Wainaku is located on the east side of the island of Hawaii at 19°44′50″N 155°6′3″W / 19.74722°N 155.10083°W / 19.74722; -155.10083 (19.747258, -155.100954). It is on the west side of Hilo Bay and is bordered by Hilo to the south and Paukaa to the north. Hawaii Route 19 is the main road through the community.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the Wainaku CDP has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.8 km), of which 1.3 square miles (3.4 km) are land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km), or 9.99%, are water.
