Geography

Boneau is located in northeastern Chouteau County at 48°17′25″N 109°51′39″W / 48.29028°N 109.86083°W / 48.29028; -109.86083 (48.290258, -109.860880). It is part of the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation of the Chippewa-Cree Tribe and is bordered to the east by the CDP of Sangrey in Hill County. It is located at the western edge of the Bear Paw Mountains and is 8 miles (13 km) east of the town of Box Elder and U.S. Route 87.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Boneau CDP has a total area of 2.45 square miles (6.35 km), of which 2.35 square miles (6.09 km) is land and 0.10 square miles (0.26 km), or 4.09%, is water. Boneau Reservoir on Boxelder Creek is in the northeast corner of the CDP. Boxelder Creek flows west to Big Sandy Creek, a tributary of the Milk River.
