Alder is a census-designated place (CDP) in Madison County, Montana, United States. The population was 86 at the 2020 census. The community takes its name from Alder Creek (named by Henry Edgar in 1863), the site of the second major gold discovery in Montana.

Geography

Alder is located at 45°19′28″N 112°6′29″W / 45.32444°N 112.10806°W / 45.32444; -112.10806 (45.324531, -112.108035). Montana Highway 287 passes through town. Ruby Reservoir is to the south.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.2 km), all land.
