History
Bison was platted in 1907, and named after the American bison which were once numerous in the area. A post office has been in operation at Bison since 1907. Bison was declared county seat in 1908.

Geography
Bison is located approximately six miles south of the South Fork of the Grand River and near the headwaters of Thunder Butte Creek. It is just south of the Grand River National Grassland.
