History

A post office was first established in Helvetia in 1875, and the name was changed to Mayer in 1888. The name Mayer was given it by railroad officials.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.42 square miles (3.68 km), of which 1.39 square miles (3.60 km) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km) is water.
