History

Chain of Rocks was platted in the 1830s, and named for a rock formation near the original town site. A post office called Chain of Rocks was established in 1869, and remained in operation until 1907.

Geography

Chain of Rocks was named after an exposure of bedrock in the Cuivre River north of St. Louis that forms a remarkable “chain of rocks” across its width. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.17 square miles (0.44 km), all land.
