History

The community bears the name of Colonel John R. Hurt, an early citizen.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.8 km), all of it land.

The sole major road to go through the town is U.S. Route 29, via a business spur that also goes through Altavista; the main road bypasses both towns to the west.
