Geography

Eureka is located at 32°0′45″N 96°17′33″W / 32.01250°N 96.29250°W / 32.01250; -96.29250 (32.012403, –96.292524).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km), of which, 2.3 square miles (6.0 km) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km) of it (3.33%) is water. The settlement developed around a log schoolhouse known as Dunn’s School just before the Civil War. In 1870 residents applied for a post office, and at a Grange meeting decided on the name Eureka. That same year a post office was opened in the home of P. Anderson, and within a few years a small town grew up there. By 1885 Eureka reported several steam gristmills and cotton gins, two churches, a district school, and an estimated population of twenty-five.
