South America comprises most of the Latin American region as its people primarily use Spanish and Portuguese. It boasts the world’s largest tropical rainforest and river (Amazon), the highest mountain range outside Asia (Andes), remote islands (Galapagos archipelago, Easter Island, and Fernando de Noronha), paradise beaches (like in northeastern Brazil), vast deserts (Atacama), icy landscapes (Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego), the world’s highest waterfall (Angel Falls, 979m in Venezuela), and one of the largest natural attractions (Iguazu Falls, Argentina and Brazil), among other spectacular features.

Spanish is the official language of all South American countries except Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana, and is widely spoken even in countries that historically did not speak Spanish.

Portuguese is the official language of Brazil, which accounts for about half of the continent’s population and area. In Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana, the official languages used are English, Dutch, and French, respectively.
