- Mainland Southeast Asia: Includes the mainland and large islands mainly located in continental Southeast Asia. Countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar are in this region. This is an area rich in mountains and rivers, with the presence of the Himalayan and Annamite mountain ranges.
- Maritime Southeast Asia: Consists of many large archipelagos and islands such as Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and East Timor. This region is famous for earthquakes and volcanic activity, and has many beaches, tropical forests, and coral reefs.
Physical Map
Southeast Asia has diverse terrain, from mountains to plains, from tropical forests to deserts, and from high mountains to long coastlines. This region also has many large rivers, lakes, and bays, creating favorable conditions for rich natural resources and biodiversity.
Climate Map
The climate of Southeast Asia is mainly tropical hot and humid year-round with abundant rainfall. Northern Vietnam and the mountainous areas of Laos and Myanmar are the only regions in Southeast Asia with a subtropical climate, having colder winters.

- Vietnam is the country of motorcycles. There are over 45 million registered motorcycles in the country, meaning nearly half the population owns their own motorcycle. This seems normal to Vietnamese people, but very strange to people from other countries when they come here.
- Men in Thailand are all Buddhist monks for a long time: There was a time when all young men in Thailand (including royalty) had to become Buddhist monks – even for a short time – before they turned 20.
- Cambodia once had a thriving music scene in the 1960s, with Khmer Pop music being very popular and loved by Western countries as well.
- Land of temples: With a long cultural history and unique culture, Southeast Asia is home to some of the most impressive temples in the world. In Thailand alone, there are about 35,000 temples and it is known as the land of golden temples. In Cambodia, you can visit Angkor Wat. In Myanmar, you can visit the ancient city of Bagan.
- Chinese people make up a significant population in most Southeast Asian countries, especially in Malaysia and Singapore.
- Southeast Asia includes over 30,000 islands scattered across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Indonesia has over 18,000 islands of its own. Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines also have thousands of islands with beautiful beaches and coastlines.
- Islam is a major religion in Southeast Asia: Islam is the state religion in Malaysia and Brunei. Although 85% of Indonesia’s population is Muslim, a larger number than any country in the world, Islam is not the state religion of Indonesia. Muslims are also present in Singapore and southern Philippines, although they are a minority.
